Description |
Drawing by Heide Fasnacht, Aladdin Demolition, Las Vegas (graphite on paper, 40" x 60", 2016). The image illustrates Heide Fasnacht's career-long body of drawings, which she has produced alongside parallel sculpture and installation series. Her drawings have been noted for their refinement, drafting skill and varied mark-making, which can include crosshatching (as in this graphite work), newsprint-like rendered dots and actual holes, among other techniques, in colored-pencil, graphite and tape. Fasnacht's subjects have included constellation-like forms based on eye-movement charts, explosions, representations of looted artifacts, book burnings and as in this work, Las Vegas scenes involving casino demolitions, fireworks and light shows. This work and similar works have been publicly exhibited in prominent venues, discussed in major art journals and daily press publications, and acquired by museums. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a career-long body of work in Heide Fasnacht's output: her drawing series, which she has created alongside—rather than as preparation for—parallel sculpture and installation series. Her drawings have been noted for their refinement, drafting skill and varied mark-making, which can include crosshatching, newsprint-like rendered dots and actual holes, among other techniques. Fasnacht's drawing series include: "REM" (1996–7), constellation-like graphite works based on eye-movement charts; the colored-pencil and graphite "Explosions/Implosions" (1997–2003); "The ERR Project" (2007–8), depicts looted artifacts in artist's tape and dry transfer textures on vellum; the graphite and colored-pencil "Book Burnings" (2009–13); and the colored-pencil and graphite "Casinos" and "Casino Countdowns" (2015–7), which depict Las Vegas demolition sites, fireworks and light shows. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this key component of her artistic output, which brought additional recognition through exhibition in major venues, coverage by major critics in publications and books, and museum acquisitions. Fasnacht's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article. |
