Summary

Description
English: Hedgebank erected circa 1824 by John Knight (d.1850), who in 1818 purchased the Forest of Exmoor. This particularly well-preserved section is part of the 29 miles of stock-proof barrier he erected around his estate. It separates the Forest from the manor of North Molton, to the west (left). The road runs between Sandyway Cross and Kinsford Gate, the view here being towards Kinsford Gate. Made of earth with stone facing and planted on top with beech trees, regularly cut and laid every decade or so to form (in the days before barbed wire and wire netting) an impenetrable horizontal barrier to livestock.
