DescriptionHaswell 1st railway station (site), County Durham (geograph 6504798).jpg
English: Haswell 1st railway station (site), County Durham Opened in 1836 by the Hartlepool Railway and Docks Company, later part of the North Eastern Railway, as the terminus of the line from Hartlepool via Wellfield, this station closed in 1858 when it was superseded by a through station nearby.
View north west along the former track-bed towards the buffers. The Durham and Sunderland Railway met this line at ninety degrees with some kind of interchange facility between the companies. In 1858, this was replaced by a curve (out of view to the right) that enabled through trains between Sunderland and Hartlepool. A direct route was opened in 1905 between Sunderland and Hartlepool via Horden which led to the eventual closure of lines in this area.
