Summary

Description

Tinted postcard of Harlow Moor, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England, in 1916. In the late 19th century, antiquarian William Grainge and naturalist John Farrah would take this walk through Harlow Moor to Birk Crag. Postmarked 2 November 1916. A Valentines Series card.

Notes:

  • The women's suits were called costumes, pronounced in the French manner, with the emphasis on the second syllable. The hat worn by the woman in the middle of the group of three was a hand-made style, made with cloth, stiffening and starch, rather like a nurse's hat (but not). These hats were often white, so the tint may be misleading, here.
  • The two fine spires of the Grove Road Cemetery Chapels, Harrogate, are visible in the distance. They were admired as a landmark, but they were demolished in 1958, although the cemetery is still there.
