DescriptionHans Holbein the Younger - Unknown man with a beard RL 12258.jpg
English: Portrait of an Unidentified Man with a Beard. Black and coloured chalks and pen and ink and brush on pink-primed paper, 27.5 × 21.1 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle.
This drawing, exceptionally well preserved, includes fine use of wash, especially in the hat, and of chalk modelling, especially round the eyes. Holbein demonstrates mastery and variety in the use of both pen and brush. Wenceslas Hollar's etching of 1647 (see "Other versions" below) indicates that the drawing was a study for a roundel or miniature. Unlike many of Holbein's drawings in the Royal Collection, this one has not been reworked or retouched by other hands.
