Summary

Description
English: Detail (cropped version) of an Edo period (18th-19th century) Japanese painting of a Hakutaku (aka Bai Ze). This creature is symbolic of good health, especially herbal medicine; in the painting, it has a small "cosmic egg" between the horns on its head, symbolic of "wishes granted". The painting was created as an "icon"/talisman, to promote good health/to ward off disease. Sumi ink, with some orange-red colouring, now quite faded, on paper; scroll mounted. Seal markings present, but not (yet) identified (research needed!).
Date 18th - 19th century, Edo period, Japan
