DescriptionHaig in uniform on joining the Hussars (4688529984).jpg
English: Haig as a Hussar, Britain, 1885. A studio portrait of Douglas Haig as a young man of 23, in uniform after he had joined the 7th (Queen's Own) Hussars in February 1885. After attending Oxford University, he had undertaken his basic military training at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in 1884. He remained in the Hussars for nine years.
The 7th (Queen's Own) Hussars were an elite cavalry unit, originally raised under the name Cunningham's Dragoons in Scotland in 1689. It is understandable that Haig should have joined a cavalry regiment. However, his understanding of traditional cavalry tactics was of little use in the technologically advanced and very static conditions of trench warfare.
