Notes |
Psa tape. E-mail from Jonas Franzen (10 June 2013): I have reason to say that this may be not correct: there is no privateer captured in 1799 that would fit to the vessel depicted on the plan in terms of size. I am quite sure that Heureux was captured on 5th March 1800 by the frigate Phoebe: In the London Gazette (Gazette Issue 15241 published on the 22 March 1800. Page 3), Captain Barlow of the Phoebe gives the dimensions of a large privateer ship called Heureux that he captured in March 1800: 128 ft x 32 1/2 ft. Interestingly, these dimension nearly correspond to the ones given on the plan: 127 8 1/2 ft x 33 1 ft. Consequently, I think that the ship described by Captain Barlow and the one depicted on the plan are identical. Therefore, 1799 as the date of capture would be wrong. Additionally, this plan shows the Heureux as fitted and is dated August 1800 - taking the date of capture as March 1800, this would make more sense than 1799 [JM note - 2 Oct 2013] |
