English: Background and education

David Guwatudde was born in Kampala, Uganda. He was educated at Aga Khan Primary School (https://agakhanschools.azurewebsites.net/Uganda/AKPSK/Index), Kololo Senior Secondary School (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kololo_Senior_Secondary_School), Makerere College School (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makerere_College_School). He joined Makerere University in 1980 (https://www.mak.ac.ug/), where he obtained a Bachelor of Statistics, graduating in 1984. He later obtained a Masters degree in Social Statistics from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/demography/index.page). In 2003 he obtained a doctorate in Epidemiology from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio USA (https://case.edu/medicine/).

Work experience [edit source] David Guwatudde started his professional career in 1984 working as a Statistician in the then Department of Statistics (now Uganda Bureau of Statistics). After obtaining his Masters degree in Social Statistics with a bias to medical statistics in 1987 from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, he joined the then Faculty of Medicine (now College of Health Sciences), Makerere University in 1991. He has been one of the leading researchers in the epidemiology of chronic non-communicable diseases in Uganda. He has co-authored several articles in international peer reviewed journals on epidemiology of chronic non-communicable diseases (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/bibliography/1vkQga2pwu75g/bibliography/public/ ). He has attended many national, regional and International conferences as a presenter and/or chair. In the 2005, he was appointed Head of Department of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics within the School of Public Health; and later in 2011 Deputy Dean of the School of Public Health – a position he served in briefly before the university removed the position of Deputy Dean from its structure in 2011.

Guwatudde has co-supervised several students at both Masters and Doctorate level, and has been actively involved in research with collaboration with colleagues at Harvard School of Public Health and Yale University in the USA, and Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
