Description
Traveling on the River in Clearing Snow, by Guo Zhongshu (c. 910–977 AD). This painting shows a pair of Chinese cargo ships (with stern-mounted rudders) accompanied by a smaller craft. It is painted on silk and dated to the early Song Dynasty period (960–1279 AD).

Notes This painting is part of a pair of paintings. The other is located at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The text in the upper left was written by Song Huizong, the 8th emperor of the Song Dynasty. The text in the upper center was written by Qianlong Emperor in 1791.
