English: Gabriel Guay, Les bourreaux des bois, exhibited at the Paris Salons of 1909 and 1914, installed in 1922 at the Mairie de Bourges, France. Guay's inspiration was a an poem by Pierre de Ronsard (1524-1585), "Elégies, XXIV, Contre les bûcherons de la forêt de Gastine," specifically these verses, which were printed on the painting's frame:
Ecoute, bûcheron, arrête un peu le bras;
