Summary

Description

A fine group of gentlemen gathered to commemorate something at Hugginstown. Looking at the related images which appear on the NLI catalogue it is clear that this was an annual event but what was it and who were "Treacy, Power and Phelan"?

Again thanks to our amazing community, the klaxons have rung for the elusive trifecta: date, location and extensive detail on subject. A summary of all the fantastic contributions today would not do justice. However, the location was established as the chapel at Hugginstown, County Killkenny, the date as 1925, and the subject of the banner as the 1831 Carrickshock incident. [/photos/47297387@N03/ Carol Maddock] capped this off with seeming confirmation that the group pictured represent the committee involved with the 1925 construction of a memorial marker to the events of 1831. While 14 are pictured here, the committee included at least 12: - James Walsh (chairman from Templeorum) - Michael Duggan (of Ballinteskin) - John Walsh (of Kilkeasy) - Patrick Walsh (of Carrickshock) - Edward Walsh (of Munster Express/Waterford Mayor) - Thomas O'Dwyer (of Croan) - John Lee (of Newmarket) - Thomas Holden (of Newmarket) - Thomas O'Donovan (of Condonstown) - Edmond V. Drea (of Waterford) - Michael O'Farrell (trustee of Ballyknock) - and P. Molloy (sculptor and contractor for the monument)
