Notes: This treasury warrant was issued in Houston by the Government of Texas. These were the first engraved notes issued by the Republic and were issued from January 15, 1838 to February 1839; the total amount was $650,629.00, not including reissues. A vignette of a sailor raising his cap and holding a flag with a single star appears in the upper- and mid-border of the left edge of the note; the number 50 appears below in the lower-left corner. A vignette of Justice seated is printed in the upper-center of the note; the number 50 is appears to the left and right of the vignette in an ornate scroll design. The abbreviation No. is printed twice along the top edge of the note; the number 40 is handwritten adjacent to both. The plate designation A is also printed in two places along the top edge. The following imprint appears in the upper-right corner of the note: Draper. Toppan. Longacre & Co. Phila. & NY. The note is signed on the recto by Henry Smith, Treasurer, and Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, President. Smith was known as the first American governor of Texas, during the provisional government operating from November 15, 1835 until March 1, 1836, as well as secretary of the treasury during Sam Houston's term as president, and a member of the House of Representatives during the Republic (TSHA). Lamar was a solider, the second president of the Republic, a respresentative of Nueces and San Patricio counties in the Second Texas Legislature, and the United States minister to Nicaragua and Costa Rica beginning in 1857 (TSHA).
