MIGNARD, Pierre
(b. 1612, Troyes, d. 1695, Paris)
God the Father
after 1664
Oil on canvas, 47 x 60 cm
National Gallery of Art, Washington
Since the eighteenth century this oval canvas was attributed to Francesco Albani. However, although the style is indebted to Albani, whose classicising art was greatly admired in seventeenth-century France, the painting is by the hand of a French artist, a student of Pierre Mignard or a member of his circle.
The painting can be related to Mignard's cupola fresco in the Val-de-Grâce, Paris.
