Summary

Description
English: Cross from the so-called Grave of Duke Gisulf, cemetery of Cella - San Giovanni
  • Cividale del Friuli, Province Udine, Region Friuli-Venèzia-Giùlia, Italy

The deceased lay in a wooden coffin which in turn lay within a stone sarcophagus. The inscription CISVL is engraved on one of the top surfaces of the sarcophagus cover. Following the discovery of the burial, a dispute arose about the authenticity of the inscription. Today we are generally inclined to regard it as a forgery of the 19th century, intended to bolster the attribution of the burial to Gisulf, the first Lombard duke of Friuli. Regardless, the grave goods of this burial are among the most splendid to have been found in Cividale.

Recent anthropological investigations of the preserved bone fragments have enabled an attribution to an adult male of considerable stature without any indications of an advanced age.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Museo archeologico nazionale di Cividale del Friuli.
Deutsch: Kreuz aus dem sogenannten Grab des Herzogs Gisulf, Gräberfeld von Cella - San Giovanni
  • Cividale del Friuli, Provinz Udine, Region Friuli-Venèzia-Giùlia, Italien
