| Text | Latina: Item exemplum de illo qui quaesivit a magistro Johanne Cornubiensi quis esset busillis? Putabat enim proprium nomen regis vel alicujus magni viri fuisse. Interroganti autem magistro Johanni ubinam hoc, et in qua scriptura inveniretur, respondit quoniam in missali; et currens propter librum suum, ostendit ei in fine columnae paginae unius scriptum in die, in principio vero alterius columnae bus illis, quod recte distinctum facit “in diebus illis.” Quo viso, magister Johannes dixit ei: “Quoniam de divina pagina hoc erat principium, videlicet evangelii, se velle in crastino in publico scholae suae auditorio istud inquiri.” Quo facto, cum sequutus esset omnium risus, ostendit magister, hinc occasionem sumens, exemplis variis quantum accidat in clero dedecus et scandalum ex ignorantiae tenebris et illiteraturae. |
| Translation | English: Another example (sc. of the illatinity of contemporary clergy) is the scholar who asked his master John of Cornwall: Who was Busillis? He thought it was the name of a king or another great man. When John asked him in which book he had found the expression, the scholar answered: in the missal. And fetching the book, he showed his master at the end of one column the words in die and at the beginning of the next the word busillis - which, correctly grouped, makes in diebus illis. Master John, seeing that, said to him: "Considering that the word originates from a holy page, that is from the gospel, I will inquire it tomorrow with the audience in my public lesson." The master did so, and answered by the laughter of all, he took the occasion to show by more examples what shame and scandal was brought over the clergy by their dark ignorance and illiterateness.
Deutsch: Ein weiteres Beispiel (sc. für die mangelnde Lateinkenntnis des zeitgenössischen Klerus) ist der theologische Schüler, der seinen Meister Johannes von Cornwall fragte, wer Busillis sei. Er glaubte, das sei der Name eines Königs oder eines anderen großen Mannes. Als Johannes ihn fragte, in welchem Buch er den Ausdruck gefunden habe, antwortete er: Im Messbuch. Und er holte das Buch herbei und zeigte seinem Meister am Ende einer Kolumne die Wörter in die und am Anfang der nächsten das Wort busillis – was richtig getrennt in diebus illis ergibt. Als Meister Johannes das sah, sagte er zu ihm: Da das Wort aus einer heiligen Buchseite stammt, nämlich aus dem Evangelium, will ich es morgen in der öffentlichen Vorlesung mit meinen Studenten erörtern. Das tat er, und nach dem Gelächter aller ergriff er die Gelegenheit, um mit weiteren Beispielen zu zeigen, welche Schande und welches Ärgernis die finstere Unwissenheit und Unbildung des Klerus hervorriefen. |
