Summary

Description

This is a gilded bronze Chinese statuette of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, or Guan Yin, made during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), dated late 7th to early 8th century. The Metropolitan Museum of Art caption for this art piece reads as thus:

The small sculpture of a Buddha in his headdress and the pot that he holds in his proper right hand identify the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. The shape of the pot and the birdlike cap, on the other hand, typify metalworks and ceramics produced in China in the late seventh and early eighth centuries.
