| Notes | Portrait possibly of Hercules, a Mount Vernon's chef and presidential cook in the nation's early capital in Philadelphia. He ran away in early 1797 after being put to work as a regular laborer back at Mount Vernon to circumvent a Pennsylvania's statute that would free any slave that lived six months in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
