Description
English: At an arched window of stone, with a curtain drawn back, a violin-player stands with smiling face turned to the spectator. He has long curls, on which his hat is set awry, and wears a brown jacket. His music-book lies before him on the window-ledge, and his sword is leaning against the window to the right. In the left background is a landscape on an easel, with a globe behind it. Beneath the window-ledge in front is a bas-relief of children playing with a he-goat, by Duquesnoy. This is not a portrait of the artist — as Sm. thought — according to Martin and the Dresden catalogue. Dou was then fifty-two. But the sitter was probably an artist, to judge from the background.
