Notes
English: Frou-Frou is the main character of a comedy of the same name by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, written in 1869 and published in 1870. Clairin's painting is said to be inspired by Sarah Bernhardt's interpretation of the part, though it is not a portrait of her.
