A portrait of UFA MLA George Mihalcheon. Inscription on the reverse reads: "Mihalcheon / G. M. Mihalcheon / Whitford"
George Mihalcheon was born in Boian, Bukovina in 1893 and moved to the Hairy Hill area in 1901 with his father. He was graduated as a teacher from Camrose Normal School in 1918, and taught at the Romanian school in Boian. Mihalcheon was active in the Boian local of the United Farmers of Alberta and helped institute a local coop store and community hall. Mihalcheon ran in the 1926 alberta general election as a UFA candidate in the electoral district of Whitford, winning the seat. Mihalcheon was the first Alberta MLA of Romanian origin. He retired from the legislature after one term, allowing Isidore Goresky to stand as a UFA candidate in the 1930 election, who went on to win the seat for Whitford.
