DescriptionGeorge Lehman's Round House main entrance (00078756).jpg
English: Close-up view of the Round House main entrance, located from Main to Spring streets, between 3rd and 4th. The cactus hedge that fenced the Spring Street front of the garden was still intact at this time, but the tree of knowledge had been cut down. The adobe Round House was a famous landmark of early days known as the "Garden of Paradise". After the garden closed, the city's first kindergarten was opened here. Photograph dated: 1880.
Historical Notes: This adobe, known as the Round House as well as the "Garden of Paradise", was built in 1854 by Ramon Alexander as a gift to his Spanish bride Maria Valdez, daughter of Basilio Valdez, who came to Los Angeles from Spain in 1830. In the late 1850s, it was sold to German immigrant George Lehman, better known as "Round House George", and it long housed his famous beer garden known as the Garden of Paradise, which eventually became a famous landmark and a very popular pleasure resort at the time. After the garden closed, the city's first kindergarten was opened here, with Kate Douglas Wiggin as teacher. Sadly, it was torn down in or about 1887.
