Description
English: Portrait of George Dobson and Charlton Howitt taken before 28 May 1863. The surveyor George Dobson was the son of Edward Dobson, and the brother of Arthur Dudley Dobson. He was murdered by the Burgess Gang on 28 May 1866, who mistook him for a gold buyer. Herbert Charlton Howitt was a famer and prospector who arrived from Australia in 1860. He was contracted to cut a track over the Hurunui Saddle, and drowned in Lake Brunner on 27 June 1863. Both are commemorated on the Westland Explorers' Monument in Hokitika Cemetery. This photograph was likely taken in 1862 or 1863.
Date probably 1862–1863
