English: George Bush was free Black man who helped establish the first American settlement north of the Columbia River in what was Oregon Territory. He brought cuttings of butternut trees from his farm in Missouri with him across the Oregon Trail. This tree at his new homestead in Tumwater, Washington grew from one of those cuttings.
