Summary

Description
English: The first page of the first Russian book printed in the "civil script" (гражданский шрифт /graZdansk'ij Sr'ift/) introduced by decree of Peter the Great in 1708.

The book is the Geometry (Геометрия /g'eom'etr'ija/), published in Moscow, March 17, 1708.

The language tries to steer away from w:Church Slavonic, but is very different from the literary forms that will have evolved by 1800.

Note that the modern Russian letters и, з are not used, and are replaced by i (without dot) and s. Abolished in the initial decree, the two modern letters would be tacitly reinstated within the decade. The letter s soon fell out of use in secular writing, but i lingered until put to rest in 1918.
