Summary

Description
English: Publicity photo of Gene Carroll and Glenn Rowling who were known for their "Jake and Lena" characters. The duo had an NBC Red Network radio show that aired six nights a week from the WTAM Radio studios beginning in 1933. In the days when these men were broadcasters, radio studios resembled living or sitting rooms. When it was in Chicago, Amos n' Andy was broadcast from a studio that was designed to resemble an English library at home. Thus it looks like they are broadcasting from someplace other than a radio studio. The copy on the back of the photo is hard to read but it says, "Gene and Glenn otherwise "Jake and Lena" of radio fame who headline Michigan Theatre bill this week."
When this radio show was on the air, most network programming originated from either New York or Chicago, so it was uncommon to have a network radio show broadcasting from Cleveland. It's also of note that the program was on the NBC Red Network, as it was considered the "premier", as opposed to the NBC Blue Network. In 1935, Amos 'n' Andy had only moved to the Red Network after some years on Blue. NBC had not yet fully established a Radio City West in Hollywood where many network shows from these cities would later relocate to. When NBC was forced to divest itself of one of its networks by an antitrust suit circa 1942, it chose to sell the Blue Network, which became ABC.

Author The original owner of the photo is either NBC network or WTAM. Since a copy was provided for publicity purposes to the media for their engagement at the Michigan Theatre, it appears that the entertainers were also provided with copies of the photo for their own uses. There is no photographer mark on it.

Pre-1978, no mark

  • The photo was taken at the radio studios of WTAM, which is where their program aired from for the NBC network. As above, at the time, radio studios looked a lot like living rooms or sitting rooms and were designed that way to put people, some of whom were not professional broadcasters, at ease and to try to make them feel more comfortable.
  • The fact that the performers distributed this photo to the media for personal appearances they were doing indicates that either WTAM or NBC provided them with a supply of copies of this publicity photo with the apparent idea that any publicity generated for the comedy team would also benefit their radio program and the network it was aired on.
  • No copyright marks are seen on the photo.
  • The dating makes the item well within the pre-1978 timeframe.
  • United States Copyright Office page 2 "Visually Perceptible Copies The notice for visually perceptible copies should contain all three elements described below. They should appear together or in close proximity on the copies.
