Description
English: Shuttleworth arms, Gawthorpe Hall, Lancashire, England. Kay-Shuttleworth, Baron Shuttleworth. Argent, three shuttles sable tipped and threaded or (Shuttleworth) quartering: Argent, two bendlets sable between as many crescents azure between the bendlets three ermine spots (Debrett's Peerage, 1968, p.1020) blazoned better as: Argent, three ermine spots in bend between two bendlets sable the whole between as many crescents azure ("Kay" per: Complete Guide to Heraldry/Chapter 7[1]) (Kay given elsewhere as: Argent, two bendlets sable) With an inescutcheon of pretence of Shuttleworth quartering Three boar's heads (Gordon?) with an inescutcheon above of a Red Hand of Ulster for a baronet. Motto: Prudentia, Justitia, Kind Kin When Known Keep. Scrollwork surround to shield, a feature of Elizabethan design. Date in middle of scroll: "1851", thus representing Sir James Phillips Kay-Shuttleworth, 1st Baronet (1804-1877) (born James Kay), who in 1842 married Janet Shuttleworth (born 1817), heiress of Gawthorpe Hall, and assumed by royal licence the name and arms of Shuttleworth.
