Notes Gaulli painted a large number of cardinals and popes, possibly thanks to the protection of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). Whereabouts of only fifteen or so of these portraits are known today. In almost all of them, the sitters' head and shoulders are shown against the sobriety of a neutral ground devoid of decoration. In the collection of the diocese of Palestrina in Lazio, there is a similar portrait inscribed on the back of the canvas "LAURENTIUS CARD.", and another in Musei Civici in Pavia (Inv. P1507) by Gaulli, depicting cardinal Lorenzo Raggi (1615-1687). Identification of the sitter by Marcin Latka (Artinpl), 27.12.2021.
