Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | Show the image discussed in the article, and Sendak's proposed visual style for the projected book, to support the section of the article devoted to the 'unrealised Maurice Sendak set'. Since the text and image support each other, the image has an important function in the section and is not "decorative". Further, since the image is the only one in the section, it is not part of a "gallery". Sendak is a well-known illustrator of children's books, and it is a matter of encyclopedic (and scholarly) interest that there was a dialogue between Sendak and Tolkien for a set of Middle-earth illustrations. This the only surviving drawing has been described as "subtle and masterly": having it here enables readers to judge its quality for themselves. Given that Tolkien did not want The Hobbit to be seen as a children's book, an association with Sendak might have been thought unlikely, but with the image present, readers can decide whether they feel the treatment in the drawing is childish or otherwise, or in keeping with Tolkien's themes. |
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
This exact image is discussed; further, it is actually the only surviving sample drawing by Sendak of a Tolkien subject, so it is unique and irreplaceable. |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | The image is the only one in the Sendak section, where it directly supports the critical discussion, so it does not form part of any gallery. It is the only Sendak image in the article, and indeed anywhere else on Wikipedia. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
It seems unlikely, as Sendak never went further in illustrating Tolkien, and the image is already available online at various places on the Web at better resolution. |
