Summary

Description
English: This Cartoon depicts a generic GPCR as it may be found within the plasma membrane localized to a lipid raft. It is a 2-dimensional schematic highlighting select structural features that are important to the biological function of many different GPCRs.

Abbreviations, etc:

Branched N-glycan

Filled black Squares= N-acetylglucosamine

Unfilled Circles= Mannose

Each circle making up the long chain represents an amino acid. The peptide motifs are represented by filled circles and labeled using commonly accepted single-letter abbreviations for each amino acid.

N= Asparagine,

x= any amino acid,

S/T= Serine or Threonine,

C= Cysteine (attached S represents an oxidized sulfhydryl group),

E/D= Glutamate or Aspartate,

Y=Tyrosine,

R/K= Arginine or Lysine

GPCR domains:

IL-1 to IL-3= Intracellular loops 1-3

EL-1 to EL-3= Extracellular loops 1-3

Other Proteins:

G-alpha= Alpha subunit of a heterotrimeric G-protein

G-beta/gamma= G-beta/gamma heterodimer of heterotrimeric G-protein

PKC= Protein Kinase C

PKA= Protein Kinase A

GRK= G-protein Coupled Receptor Kinase (GPCR kinase)

Final note: The consensus sequence for PKC phosphorylation is written in the legend from C to N terminus, while the other motifs are all shown as N to C. Actually Im not sure if this matters or not...

The information used was cobbled together from numerous scientific journal articles...I didn't really keep track. More recent articles were used as sources of information whenever possible. The image was made using Adobe Illustrator CS3. If you want to edit it using the original, unrasterized format just message me. Also there is another copy of this as a jpeg, I'm just trying out different formats here.
