Summary

Description

I think this is a really good portrait of GMB, his glorious wild hair, the Viking jut of jaw, his see-all sea-blue eyes and a smile as disarming as it is full of promise. Sunny side up no doubt but the artist has captured more than the image of the man. The portrait is a worthy companion for his bust in the Stromness Public Library. I believe there are plans afoot to create a George Mackay Brown memorial garden not far from the library, his reputation continues to grow. A plaque beside the portrait bears the following inscription:

Fred Schley is a successful Dutch portrait and landscape painter dividing his time between his homeland and the UK. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, close friend of GMB and fellow-aficionado of the Island of Hoy has also been painted by Schley, that portrait is in the collection of the Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums. A further Davies/Brown connection was established when the first St.Magnus Festival was held in Kirkwall in 1977. The festival opening performance was "The Martyrdom of St.Magnus", words written by George Mackay Brown, music composed by Peter Maxwell Davies, two true friends and collaborators. (If I remember it right it was at Sir Peter's Hoy home that GMB first publicly announced his conversion to the Roman Catholic church).
