Summary

Description
English: Dane County Supervisors R. Richard "Dick" Wagner and Earl Bricker were among an estimated 7,500 people who braved unseasonably cold weather to participate in the GALVAnize march organized by the Gay and Lesbian Visibility Alliance in Madison, Wisconsin, on May 6, 1989. The march down State Street was preceded by a rally at the Capitol Square featuring speeches by a number of dignitaries, including Madison Alderperson Ricardo Gonzalez (the nation's first openly gay Latino-American elected official), State Rep. David Clarenbach (principal author of Wisconsin's 1982 first-in-the-nation LGBT rights law), and then Dane County Supervisor Tammy Baldwin (the first out lesbian elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and to the U.S. Senate in 1999 and 2013, respectively). Together with Miss Gay R.Madison, all seven of Wisconsin's openly gay and lesbian elected officials served as grand marshals, including Dane County Supervisor Kathleen Nichols, Madison Alderperson Jim McFarland, and Shorewood Village Alderperson John Nees.
