(...)en este periodo [reinados de Felipe II y Felipe III] se ve timbrado el escudo de las armas reales de tres cimeras con otros tantos yelmos a la manera germánica. Así (...) aparece en el Monasterio de El Escorial [sobre las esculturas de Leoni situadas en el interior de la basílica] la cimera del centro, es la que adoptó Juan II de Castilla: un castillo con un león saliente que lleva una espada. A su diestra el dragón de los reyes de Aragón, que aparece por vez primera en el sello de Pedro IV.
A la siniestra el análogo dragón de los reyes de Portugal, adoptado por Juan II algo después de 1383.
