English: In April 2020, during my visit to the busy city of Uvira in the Uvira Territory, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), I had the pleasure of encountering an exceptionally skilled Fuliru tailor named Dorcas. Her small shop was a treasure trove of colorful fabrics and garments. I was fortunate enough to seek her expertise in altering my pants, and she effortlessly transformed them to fit me perfectly.
What struck me the most about Dorcas was her unflagging commitment to her craft. From dawn till dusk, she tirelessly worked on sewing a myriad of clothes, each one a testament to her meticulous attention to detail and her passion for creating beautiful garments. Her shop was a hub of creativity and artistry, where her hands moved swiftly, weaving threads together to bring her customers’ visions to life. Despite the challenges she faced in a country plagued by socio-economic instability, she persisted in pursuing her passion, nurturing her talent, and contributing to the local community. Her shop served as more than just a place of business; it was a symbol of hope, where dreams were sewn into reality and individual stories were woven into the fabric of Uvira's culture.
