and he served for threeyears in the German army. He died atBaversdorf, Pommerania, in 1873, at theage of forty-four years, but his father, afarmer by occupation, reached the advancedage of ninety. After the death of her hus-band, the mother of our subject came to theUnited States, and died at Oshkosh, Wis-consin, February 17, 1899, aged seventyyears. In his native land Albert Fuhrmannlearned the brewing business, beginning atthe age of nineteen years in a brewery atSchlawe, Pommerania, where he continuedto work until his emigration to America in1882. He first located in Neenah, Wiscon-sin, where he was employed in a breweryfor six months, and then went to Oshkosh.In 1896 he came to Reedsburg and purchasedthe brewery of Geffert & Paul, which he hassince conducted with marked success. Thecapacity of the plant is three thousand bar-rels per year, most of which is marketed atReedsburg, and in the manufacture of thebeer a large (;uantity of the barley grown inthis vicinity is consumed.

The family are identified with theEvangelical Lutheran chnrch. of Reeds-burg, of which ^Ir. Fuhrmann is atrustee. He takes little interest in political.agitation, but is active in many other publicaffairs, being a stockholder in the Reeils-burg Agricultural Society and a contributorti the Public Library. He is widely andfavorajjly known, and receives and meritsthe respect of his fellow citizens. NEWEL CARPENTER, Sr. iMewel Carpenter, a prominent agricult-urist and millwright, residing on sectionthirty-five, in White Creek township, Adamscounty, has been a member of the farmingcommunity since 1850, and has been a po-tent factor in its upbuilding.
