The community of Portsmouth itself was founded by Quakers exiled from Massachusetts Bay Colony, and is the second oldest colonial community in Rhode Island. The Meetinghouse, its parsonage and cemetery were added to the National Register of Historic Place in 1973. As of 2020, the buildings were listed for sale.
