Summary

Description
English: A relief of the initial furrow (sulcus primigenius) ritual during the establishment of a Roman colony. The priest or official guiding the plow wears a cinched toga (cinctus Gabinus or toga ritu Gabino). The artist seems to have been uninformed or the ritual itself misperformed. According to Roman sources, the left of the pair should be a cow rather than a bull and the ritual should have been performed with covered head (capite velato).
