Summary

Description
English: Francis Petrus Paulus, portrait of the British sculptor Alfred Gilbert, oil on canvas, 1909; signed and dated at upper right. Reproduced in The Studio, v. 48, no. 199, October 1909, p. 98.[1] The object held by Gilbert is a cock on a skull, derived from Dürer and fashioned in wax, a study for part of Gilbert's ornate Wilson Fireplace, according to Richard Dorment (Alfred Gilbert, Sculptor and Goldsmith, 1986, p. 212). I.G. McAllister in The English Illustrated Magazine (August 1912) called it "a portrait which will certainly be handed down to posterity and fame."[2] But the online Later Victorian Portraits Catalogue, by the National Portrait Gallery (London), which mistakenly says that Gilbert is holding a model for his statue of Victory, lists the location of the original painting as "untraced."[3]
