Fr. Paschal Slevin OFM was born in Ireland in 1934. He arrived in the then, Rhodesia, as a missionary priest in 1962 and worked tirelessly for many years for the development of his rural community in Hwedza district. He ignored Rhodesian government policy at the time which was to forbid the appointment of indigenous African school headmasters. During the Liberation Struggle he was firmly on the side of the oppressed. He was deported by the illegal Smith regime in 1977.
After the liberation of Zimbabwe he was invited to return and continue his development work. In recognition of his efforts he was posthumously awarded the Royal Order of Munhumutapa by the government of Zimbabwe on 15th. August, 2017. This is the highest honour that Zimbabwe can bestow on a foreigner.
