Perpetua, and ayoung woman named Felicitas were hung up in nets, at first naked;but even the brutal assembly of spectators, who delighted in scenesof horror and blood, demanded that they should be allowed theirgarments. When they were again put into the arena, a bull, goaded intomad fury, was let loose upon them. Felicitas fell mortally wounded. Perpetua was tossed, her loose robe rent, and her hair unbound.. Drawing her robe over her once more, she hastened to the side ofthe dying Felicitas, and gently raised her from the ground. Thesavage bull made no further attack upon them, and they weredragged out of the arena. But soon the fierce multitude wereheard clamoring that they should be brought back to receive theirdeath-blow in public. Having kissed each other, they were ledforth into the arena again, to be despatched by the sword. Per-petua fell into the hands of a young gladiator, unused to suchscenes, who tremblingly wounded her ineffectually more than once.

70 THE WORLDS CHRISTIAN MARTYRS. When she saw his emotion, she guided his sword with her ownhand to a vital part, and so expired. Martyrs in the Arena.The names of three young men who were also martyred uponthis occasion were Satur, Saturnius, and Secundulus. When theirturn came, they were led to the amphitheatre. There, all had thecourage to call for Gods judgment upon their persecutors; afterwhich they were made to run the gauntlet between the hunters,who had the care of the wild beasts. These men were drawn upin two ranks, and the prisoners ran between; as they passed theywere lashed and bruised, and afterward given to the tigers. False_Charges against the Christians. Some of the crimes and false accusations brought against theChristians at this time were, sedition and rebellion against the em-peror, sacrilege, murdering of infants, and eating raw flesh. It wasalso objected against them that they worshipped the head of anass; this story being invented by the Jews. They were charged
