English: "The first school constructed on the site of the Fourth Street Elementary School was a small frame building and that opened in December of 1863. It was known as the German Central Grammar School, the Fulton Street German-English School, or the Central German School. The school taught English to its’ primarily German speaking students. This wooden building was sold and relocated to a nearby lot at 151 Jackson Street and is now a private residence. In 1870 the new two story brick school was opened. The school was called Public School #5 and also Fourth Street Elementary School. This school closed and was auctioned off in 1955 to the neighboring Heer Printing Company at 386 South 4th Street, who used the building for storage until it was demolished on December 6, 1967."
