[edit]Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, first woman Army surgeon and Medal of Honor recipient. Served at First Battle of Bull Run, Patent Office Hospital, Battle of Fredericksburg, and Battle of Chickamauga; civilian contract surgeon for Army of the Cumberland; prisoner of war at Castle Thunder (prison), freed by a prisoner exchange. Wore her Medal of Honor every day after its award.
