Summary

Description
English: A comparison between EPE (ethylene vinyl acetate/polyolefin elastomer) copolymers with blue fluorescent materials added, illuminated with an ultraviolet torch. EPE is an elastomeric plastic encapsulant used with glass to laminate solar panels against air and moisture. EPE is particularly impervious against moisture and reduces the exposure of the solar cell to acetic acid through EVA hydrolysis. Therefore it is used for solar panels containing acid-sensitive solar cell architectures, such as Silicon heterojunction solar cells. By adding fluorescent materials (in this case Europium/Dysprosium-doped Strontium magnesium silicate), solar cells can improve efficiency (as ultraviolet light is absorbed too strongly to be very useful - converting it to blue light enhances photocollection) and increase lifespan (reduction of UV light degradation). These unlaminated encapsulant samples have an anti-grip texture. After lamination, the encapsulant has high optical transparency.
