Summary

Description
English: Original wartime caption: FLIGHT SERGEANT NEVILLE HEWITT of Theodore, Queensland, an Australian air gunner, who crawled across the Tunisian desert with a broken ankle, so that he could destroy secret documents and equipment in his crashed Wellington, has been awarded the MILITARY MEDAL at a recent Investiture. From where Hewitt landed in his parachute to the crashed bomber was a little over amile. He started at dawn on Monday and it was not until the following Thursday night that he managed to reach the aircraft. During that time he suffered terribly from the thirst and cold, but despite his broken ankle he finally reached his goal and systematically destroyed all secret documents and equipment. He was spotted by an outpost of the Grenadier Guards, who brought him in totheir lines. After spending a few days in an advanced dressing station, he was flown back to his unit. When he arrived Hewitt found he had been given up for dead. Picture (issued 1st December 1943) shows - FLIGHT SERGEANT NEVILLE HEWITT of Theodore, Queensland, Australia.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
