Kahlaoui, Tarek (16 January 2018) (in English) Creating the Mediterranean: Maps and the Islamic Imagination, BRILL, pp. 216 ISBN: 978-90-04-34738-0. : "The city of Algiers is represented by a flag of red, yellow and green horizontal stripes in an Ottoman atlas of 1551 (Al-Sharafīʼs atlas of 1551)." Also commented by Fregulia, Jeanette M. (2 January 2025) (in English) Windows into the Medieval Mediterranean, Taylor & Francis ISBN: 978-0-429-82021-2. : "...the flag appearing on the city of Algiers (striped with red, yellow, and green) noting the seat of the Pasha, the highest representative of the Ottoman sultan, must be associated somehow with the latter. In fact, the presence of flags that share many of the characteristics of this flag (though not exactly similar) in other important Ottoman centers reflects its Ottoman origin and also its association with a significant administrative or military corps in the Ottoman hierarchy"
