Copyright expired because the work was published without a copyright notice and/or without the necessary copyright registration. Based on available evidence, this photograph was probably taken before 1915. In 1915, Market Street Railway rebuilt its original open-ended "California" cars that operated on the Fillmore Counterbalance, enclosing the ends and running the service in two-car trains. In this photograph, the car has apparently not been reconstructed (ends are still open) and is running in single-car service.
