Summary

[edit]
Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description Hand drawn image of Fifinella, the mascot of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP).
Author or
copyright owner
Walt Disney
Source (WP:NFCC#4) Original publication: Originally recorded in fixed form in Army Air Corps documents and publicly in the WASP newsletter (formerly the Fifinella Gazette). VIRIN for the image in question: 050407-F-1234P-005

Immediate source: https://media.defense.gov/2005/Dec/27/2000573421/-1/-1/0/050407-F-1234P-005.JPG

Date of publication Between 1943 (when it was adopted as a mascot) and May 20 1945 (When a similar image was published in the WASP newsletter). Closely related images were published in the intervening time. See especially the University of North Texas archives on the matter
Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) Women Airforce Service Pilots
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) A historically important image identifying the unit mascot for the 319th Flying Training Detachment. For the Women Airforce Service Pilots article, it identifies an image closely associated with the unit itself, which was unofficially named "The Order of Fifinella" after the character.
Not replaceable with
free media because
(WP:NFCC#1)
There is no free illustration possible of a copyrighted imaged created for a specific purpose.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) Use of the file should be restricted to articles about the WASP program, the character Fifinella, or a closely related subject (e.g. a particular WASP aviator or a particular base/unit closely associated with the program)
Respect for
commercial opportunities
(WP:NFCC#2)
The file in question is the smallest and lowest resolution copy of the work whose provenance can be assured. It was originally produced to be a print image so a very low resolution digital copy cannot assume that role. Further, the Walt Disney company who owns the image and character granted a license to the United States government for use and has not since then expressed any commercial interest in this specific version or any version of the image.
