The Second World War 1939 - 1945: The Allied Army Commanders hold a conference in a hayfield in North West France. With General Montgomery are General Hodges (US 1st Army), General Crerar (Canadian 1st Army), General Bradley (US 1st Army) and General Dempsey (British 2nd Army). General Montgomery relinquished control of ground forces to Eisenhower at the beginning of September 1944, but was to remain Commander of 21 Army Group. In recognition of his role in the Allied victory in Normandy, he was promoted to Field Marshal.
