English: Eye lens fiber cells use gap junction and hemichannel distributed connexins to connect directly with neighboring cells and via the extracellular space respectively. Most of the gap junction plaques appear tiny at the interface between epithelial cells. The face of fiber cells interfacing epithelial cells is towards the viewer. Normally elongating fiber ends are adjacent the epithelial cells or lens capsule. The micrograph appears with predominantly diffuse, non-clustered hemichannels rather than large gap junction plaques. The longer fiber cells rely predominantly on the epithelial cells directly, or indirectly through other fiber cells, for metabolite exchange with the aqueous humor.
