Footnote from Britton, John, History and Antiquities of Bath Abbey Church, London, 1825, p.47:

"It appears from the Hungerfordiana of Sir Richard C. Hoare, that after the marriage of Walter de Hungerford with Maud de Heytesbury, the Hungerfords assumed the arms of her family, viz. Per Pale, indented, Gules and Vert; a Chevron Or" ... "After the marriage of another Walter de Hungerford, in the time of Edward the Third, with Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Sir Adam Fitz-John, of Cherill, in Wiltshire, some of the Hungerfords took the arms of Fitz-John; namely, Sable, two Bars Argent, in Chief three Plates ... but many of the family continued to bear those of Heytesbury."[1]
